Gestational Diabetes Screening and Treatment in Las Vegas
Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs for the first time during pregnancy and causes high blood sugar levels. It can result in maternal conditions such as difficult delivery, preterm labor and birth, and fetal conditions.
Factors that increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes:
- History of polycystic ovary syndrome or prediabetes
- Family history of diabetes
- History of gestational diabetes
- Being overweight
- Asian American, Native American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or African American heritage
- Previous birth of a baby weighing more than nine pounds
We regularly screen our patients for gestational diabetes, and if necessary, we’ll develop a custom treatment plan. This can include increasing activity, dietary adjustments, oral medications, and insulin injections. Fortunately, with proper treatment from our specialists in gestational diabetes, most women with this condition will have healthy pregnancies and births.
Preeclampsia Symptoms and Care at San Martín Hospital
Preeclampsia is a potentially dangerous complication that can occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy and affects about 5% of pregnant women in the U.S.
Factors that increase the risk of developing preeclampsia:
- Previous history of preeclampsia
- Conception by in-vitro fertilization
- First-time pregnancy
- History of lupus, blood clotting disorders, or diabetes
- History of kidney disease
- High blood pressure
- Multiple gestation (being pregnant with more than one baby)
- Obesity
- Mother’s age older than 40
- Diabetes
Symptoms of preeclampsia:
- Blood pressure greater than 140/90, especially in women who usually have normal blood pressure (less than 120/80)
- Upper abdominal pain
- Too much protein in the urine
- Swelling in the pregnant woman’s face and hands
- Temporary loss of vision, blurred vision, or light sensitivity
- Headache
While preeclampsia can’t always be prevented, our specialists in Las Vegas will help you mitigate and control your risk of developing complications. In addition, we monitor all pregnant women for signs of preeclampsia, and if necessary, we’ll develop a treatment plan that may include steroid injections, medication, or induced labor.

Nitrous Oxide: A New Pain Relief Option During Labor
We strive to provide mothers with plenty of birth options, and we’re proud to be the first in Nevada to offer nitrous oxide during childbirth. Nitrous oxide is a non-opioid pain relief option that usually takes effect within seconds and offers immediate relief of pain and anxiety.
